Freeware Boundary Noise Reduction Manual
Quick Start
For images from digital cameras, start by clicking the Auto-profile
(digital) button.
For images from film scans, start by clicking the Auto-profile
(film) button.
The Overall Noise Level and Mix in original
B&W detail settings do different things. Overall Noise Level
tells the plugin how noisy the image is while Mix in original B&W
detail controls the amount of noise reduction performed.
Adjusting Overall Noise Level: If set too low, the image
may appear to have clumps of noise. If set too high, too much detail will
be unnecessarily removed. You can manually adjust this setting to balance
between these tradeoffs. When adjusting this setting, you can check the
Preview without original detail mixed in checkbox so
that what you see is not affected by sharpening or mixing in original
detail.
Adjusting Mix in original B&W detail: This setting
adds original detail that was removed. If set too low, the image may appear
unnatural or too 'plastic'. If set too high, there will more visible noise.
The show advanced button unlocks additional settings
and parameters in the commercial version (manual
here) of the plug-in. The commercial
version allows control over sharpening, allows noise reduction to
be limited to only shadows or only highlights (e.g. sky), and finer control
over NR and sharpening over the range of fine/broad detail.
Installation Instructions

System requirements
Mac:
- Adobe Photoshop CS3 or higher
- OS X 10.4.0 or higher
- PowerPC or Intel processor (the plug-in is a Universal binary that works
on both platforms)
Windows:
- Adobe Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements 2, IrfanView, GIMP/Windows via PSPI,
Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, or higher
- Windows XP/Vista
- (Noise reduction only) A processor that supports SSE2 instructions. A Pentium
4, AMD64, or higher CPU will support this instruction set.
Changes
v2.2.0: BNR now obeys masking. Instructions added to user interface.
2.1.0: 10-20% faster.
2.0.0
- Improved noise reduction algorithm for more detail on textured areas.
- The sharpening algorithm now looks more like unsharp masking and does not have as many of the weird textures as in BNR1 when sharpening is pushed to extremes.
- Faster.
1.4.1: Fixed a subtle image quality bug. Detail should be slightly sharper
with this update.
1.4.0: Added access to sharpening controls. Improved algorithm for less
aliasing on edges and slightly less 'splotchiness' from chroma noise. Profiling
will no longer overwrite over sharpening and mix in original detail settings.
1.3.0: Released.
